One-sixth of India's population lives in Uttar Pradesh, is located in the north central part of India and has the highest population in India. Uttar Pradesh population in 2024 is estimated to be 237 million (23.7 Crores). By Aug, 2023 Uttar Pradesh population is projected to be 23.56 crores (235.68 million) as per Unique Identification Aadhar India, updated 31, May 2023. It is bounded by Bihar on the east, Haryana and Rajasthan on the west, Nepal and Uttarakhand to the north and Madhya Pradesh to the South. Its 4th biggest state in terms of land and covers the area of 243,290 sq km (93,933 sq mi) with the average density 828 persons per square kilometer. The State is often referred as "UP" or "U-P", uttar means north and pradesh means place. Hindi is the main language is most widely spoken and official language in Uttar Pradesh and the population is approximately 3% of World population. As per NFHS 2019-2021 report, Total Fertility Rate of Uttar Pradesh is 2.4 children per women compared to 2.7 in 2016 and the age of consent is 18 years.

The population in uttar pradesh is grown 3.5 times from 46 million in 1901 to 166 million in 2001.The first census recorded was in the year 1901 with a population of 46,647,804 by British India. The population is constantly increasing its growth rate from 6.56 to 25.85% till 2001 and with decreasing growth rate from 25.85 to 20.23% in 2001 to 2011. The Uttar Pradesh population by 2021 will be 236 million.

Cities

As on 2019 estimated, Lucknow is the capital city of uttar pradesh with more than 3.7 million, Kanpur is the second populated city with 3.5 million, Ghaziabad with 2.7 million and Agra with 2.2 million. Other 7 cities with more than 1 million plus population are Varanasi, Meerut, Allahabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Moradabad and Saharanpur.

Uttar Pradesh population religion wise according to 2011 census, Hindus are the largest religion in Uttar pradesh accounting to 79.7% which is 159 million people followed by Muslims with 19.2%. Other religions like Christian, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are relatively lower than 1%. The total Muslim population is 38.4 Million which stands on second populous, followed by Sikh population with 643,500.

Uttar Pradesh Population projection

According to UID, Uttar Pradesh population in 2022 is estimated to be 233.29 million (23.32 Crores), and in 2021 is estimated to be 230.9 million (23.09 Crores), population in 2020 is estimated to be 237 million (23.7 Crores) and population in 2023 is estimated to be 236 million (23.6 Crores).


Income Distribution

Uttar Pradesh is second largest State in terms of GDP, accounts to $220 billion in 2018. Agriculture, Handloom, manufacturing and tourism are the key areas of the UP economy. Besides high GDP in the state, it currently struggles with poverty level of 30%, close to 67 millions with per capita income of $810 in 2018 which is ranked at 32(lowest) in India. The states average literacy rate is 67.7% which is below to the India's average of 74%. The literacy rate of men is 79% and women is 59%.

The State is being divided into 75 districts, Allahabad with 6.6 million and 8 districts of Lucknow, Moradabad, Ghaziabad, Sitapur, Kanpur, Azamgarh, Jaunpur with more than 5 million population. Below table is the Uttar Pradesh district wise population.
