From 1990 to 2000, population increased to 591,014, and from 2000 to 2010 the population of Bhutan increase by 94,488 with a change of 15.99 percent and increase of population from 2010 to 2020 by 86,110 with a change of 12.56 percent and make up to 771,612. According to nsb projections of Bhutan population from 2018 to 2047. The projections show that the population of Bhutan will continue to rise through 2017-2047, reaching nearly 884 thousand by 2047, with increase by 21.6 percent over the period of 30 years. The Crude Birth Rate is expected to fall, from 17 per thousand now to 11 in 2047. as a result of the projected decline in fertility. The Crude Death Rate (CDR) will rise marginally in spite of the projected decline in mortality because the population would be aging.

Bhutan population by Age Group

The projected age and sex distribution in broad age group reveals that the share of the young population, below 15 years of age, will fall from 26 percent to 17 percent and that of elderly population, age 65 and higher, rise from 6 percent to 13 percent between 2017 and 2047 of the young population will also decline from about 189 thousand to 151 thousand over this time. For some time, the share of the working age population, 15-64 years, will rise to over 70 percent and the dependency ratio fall to about 40 percent between 2027 and 2042.
