Portland History
Portland is the second largest city in the Pacific Northwest with only Seattle, Washington, ranked larger in the United States. Portland was established in 1843, According to history, When William Overton and Asa Lovejoy beached on the banks of Willamette River, they were struck by the beauty of mountain and timber rich area and thought it would become a beautiful town. Bored with clearing trees and building roads, Overton sold portion of the land to Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine, in 1845. Pettygrove won the toss for choosing the "Portland" name of the town over "Boston" with Lovejoy. By 1850 the Portland population had grown to 800 people and there were log cabin hotel, steam sawmill and newspaper called Weekly Oregonian. Portland was incorporated in January 1851, the city measured 2.1 square miles. Portland has continued to grow in size and population with influx of immigrants
