The Republic of the Congo is a country located in the western coast of Central Africa, borders Gabon to the west, Cameroon to its northwest, Central African Republic to its northeast, DR Congo to the southeast, Angolan exclave of Cabinda to its south, and Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. The Republic of the Congo is on the western side of the Congo river, French ruled the Western Congo or Congo-Brazzaville from 1880, gained independence in 1960 and became the Republic of Congo. On the eastern side Belgium was the first country to claim the Eastern Congo territory previously known as the Zaire region in 1885, The Belgian government named Belgian Congo in 1908, also gained independence in 1960 forming Democratic Republic of the Congo with the Capital of Kinshasa. Republic of Congo population in 2024 is estimated to be 6.15 million, covers country area of 342,000 (132,000 sq mi) , ranks sixty-forth country by area and the one-hundred-fourteenth most populous country in the world. Its capital is Brazzaville, is sometimes referred to as the Little Paris of Africa and has an intriguing French culture, and other popular cities are Pointe-Noire, Dolisie and Nkayi. The capital of Brazzaville is an interesting cross section of markets and colorful French architecture.
