Wichita is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas, Located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River. Wichita population in 2024 is estimated to be 400,081, covering area 166.12 sq mi (430.25 sq km), ranks forty-ninth in the United States. The economy of Wichita city depends mainly on the aircraft industry. In 1914 and 1915, deposits of oil and natural gas were discovered and this triggered economic boom. In the 1920s and 1930s there were established aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita. Wichita remains a major hub of the American aircraft industry. Several airports located within the city of Wichita include McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, and Colonel James Jabara Airport. Famous restaurants such as White Castle and Pizza Hut started initially in Wichita.

Wichita-Winfield, Combined Statistical Area is an urbanized region centered on the city of Wichita. The region contains 98 cities, towns and incorporated areas ranging in population from Wichita to Freeport.
