Indiana (U.S. state abbreviation is 'IN') is the mid-western region of the United States, borders Ohio to the east, Illinois to the west, Kentucky to the south, Michigan to the north. The first european known to have visited was French explorer in 1679. Indiana was part of huge northwest territory, which included present day of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin which were ceded to US by British at the end of war. The state of Indiana was formed in 1816 and named after Native Indians, Indiana means 'Land belongs to Indians', there are fewer than 15,000 Native Indians are living in the state currently. Indiana population in 2024 is estimated to be 6.87 million, ranks 17th largest populous state in US. Its area is 36,418 sq miles (94,321 sq km), area rank is 38th largest. Indianapolis is the state capital and top cities of Indiana are Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Carmel, Fishers and Hammond. Famous Singers such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Adam Lambert and Axl Rose are born in Indiana state. Terre Haute, Evansville and Elkhart are the most dangerous cities in Indiana State.
